# Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that a search engine or AI assistant can extract a direct answer from it and present that answer in a featured snippet, an AI Overview, a voice reply, or a chatbot response.

The term predates the current wave of AI search; it grew out of featured snippets and voice assistants, where the reward for a page was being read aloud or quoted rather than clicked. It came back into use once Google's [AI Overviews](/glossary/ai-overviews) started appearing above the results for many queries. Its sibling [generative engine optimization](/glossary/generative-engine-optimization) describes the same aim from the model's side; in 2026 most people use the two interchangeably, and tool vendors pick one as a label. [Clearscope](/tools/clearscope), for example, frames its product around AEO, while [Surfer](/tools/surfer) ships an AI Tracker under the same idea.

The craft is unglamorous. Put the question in the heading and the answer in the paragraph directly under it. State one fact per sentence. Name the source of a number. Keep definitions short enough to lift whole. Google's documentation says there are no extra requirements or new files needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, so AEO is a writing discipline more than a technical one.
