Code execution and file creation are on by default on every plan, the sandbox is isolated from your systems, and the ceiling that matters day to day is 30MB per file for both uploads and downloads. Output is a real `.xlsx`, `.docx`, `.pptx`, or PDF rather than a Markdown table you have to rebuild. OpenAI's help center puts a hard limit of 512MB per file, with spreadsheets capped near 50MB depending on row size and text files capped at 2M tokens, and rate limits of 3 uploads a day on Free against 80 files every 3 hours otherwise. Analysis runs as Python in a stateful notebook environment that cannot make external web requests, and bar, line, pie, and scatter charts come back interactive.

**[Gemini](/tools/gemini).** Strongest when the data already lives in a Google account. The app takes up to 10 files per prompt at up to 100MB each, will chart an uploaded spreadsheet on request, and Google AI Pro and Ultra raise the limits and the context window.

**[Gemini Notebook](/tools/notebooklm).** Not an analysis tool, a grounding tool. It answers from sources you supplied, up to 500,000 words per source and 200MB per local upload, with citations back into the document. Use it for the methodology PDF, the data dictionary, and last year's report, not for the numbers themselves.

**Verdict:** Claude when the deliverable is a file, ChatGPT when the file is large or you want an interactive chart, Gemini when the data is already in Drive, Gemini Notebook alongside any of them for the documentation. ## Spreadsheets

**[Claude for Excel](/tools/claude-for-excel).** Generally available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, running in Excel on the web, Windows, and Mac. It answers questions about the open workbook with cell-level citations you can click, changes assumptions while keeping formula relationships intact, traces `#REF!` and `#DIV/0!` back to the root cause, and populates or builds models across multi-tab workbooks. Anthropic documents the limits plainly: no macros or VBA, no data tables, and it is not recommended for audit-critical calculations without verification. Anthropic also warns that spreadsheets from outside your company can carry hidden instructions, so treat vendor files as untrusted. **[Microsoft 365 Copilot](/tools/microsoft-copilot).** The one you buy because the rest of the company is on Microsoft 365. Microsoft licenses it as a per-user add-on on top of an eligible Microsoft 365 or Office 365 plan, while the lighter Copilot Chat comes with eligible subscriptions at no extra cost. Its advantage is reach across Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams under one admin console; its disadvantage is that its answers are harder to trace back to a cell than Claude's citations.

## Notebooks

**[Hex](/tools/hex).** The strongest team answer. The Notebook agent plans an analysis, writes SQL and Python cells, and builds visualizations from results, grounded in the data connections and semantic models you can access plus a workspace rules file. Every suggestion has to be confirmed or undone cell by cell, which is the review model an analyst actually wants. Community is free with an agent trial; Professional, Team, and Enterprise are per Editor and grant monthly credits that agent runs consume.

**[Deepnote](/tools/deepnote).** The Python-first sibling. The free tier is real but metered for AI: a small monthly allowance of completions and agent calls. The Team plan is priced per editor billed yearly and includes monthly AI, CPU, and GPU credit allowances with unlimited agent calls; Enterprise adds bring-your-own-LLM.

## Text-to-SQL and semantic layers

**[Vanna](/tools/vanna).** The open-source route, MIT licensed, offered as a self-hosted framework, a managed Vanna Cloud, and Enterprise. Version 2.0 grounds the model through agent memory rather than a `train()` call: known-correct question-and-SQL pairs and written documentation are saved to a vector store, and similar past examples are retrieved into the prompt at query time. Note before you commit: the `vanna-ai/vanna` GitHub repository was archived by its owner on March 29, 2026 and is read-only, with the last release, 2.0.2, dated February 2, 2026. **[PandasAI](/tools/pandasai).** Natural language over dataframes and databases, translating questions into Python and SQL and executing them. Licensing is MIT Expat for the main codebase with separate terms for its enterprise-edition directory, so read the LICENSE before shipping it inside a product.

**[Databricks Genie](/tools/databricks-genie).** Question answering inside the lakehouse, governed through Unity Catalog. Databricks is unusually direct about what makes it accurate: SQL expressions and example queries beat plain-text instructions, table and column descriptions are critical, and you should start with five or fewer tables and stay under thirty. Genie One and Genie Agents are free for user traffic through January 31, 2027 and pay-as-you-go afterwards, with Genie Code already billed pay-as-you-go and compute billed separately throughout.

**[ThoughtSpot Spotter](/tools/thoughtspot-spotter).** The enterprise conversational analytics agent. Rather than free-form text-to-SQL, it translates a question into search tokens grounded in Spotter Semantics, its governed [semantic layer](/glossary/semantic-layer), then compiles those into traceable SQL that enforces joins, hierarchies, and security. Pricing runs per user on Essentials, credit-based on Pro, and custom on Enterprise, and ThoughtSpot states it does not meter LLM tokens.

**Verdict:** Vanna or PandasAI if you are building the feature yourself, Genie if you are already on Databricks, Spotter if hundreds of non-analysts will ask questions. ## The agent in the terminal

[Claude Code](/tools/claude-code) plus [Postgres MCP](/tools/postgres-mcp) is the setup that costs the least and explains itself the most. Postgres MCP Pro is MIT licensed and has two access modes: unrestricted read/write for development, and a restricted mode that enforces a read-only transaction and rejects attempts to escape it. ## What I would actually pay for

One assistant, one place the code runs, and one governed layer if other people ask questions. In practice that means the Claude plan you already have, Claude for Excel if models are your job, a notebook seat only when a team will reuse the work, and a conversational analytics purchase only when the requests you field are the same five questions from different people.
