# Best Web Search APIs for AI Agents in 2026: Tavily vs Exa vs Brave vs Parallel

> Tavily, Exa, the Brave Search API, Parallel, Jina Reader and Firecrawl compared on search, extraction, answers, index ownership, and official MCP servers.

Pick by job. Tavily is still the one-key default for search plus extraction, Exa leads on semantic search over its own index, Brave offers an independent index with pre-extracted LLM Context, and Parallel pairs objective-based search with deep research. Jina Reader and Firecrawl are the extraction specialists. All six ship official MCP servers.

Most agents need two web APIs, not one: a search API that returns ranked results and an extractor that turns pages into clean text. [Tavily](/tools/tavily), owned by Nebius since February 2026, is still the easiest single-key default. [Exa](/tools/exa), the [Brave Search API](/tools/brave-search-api) and [Parallel](/tools/parallel) are the strongest alternatives if you want results from an independent index, while [Jina Reader](/tools/jina-reader) and [Firecrawl](/tools/firecrawl) win when the job is extraction.

## Three jobs: search results, extraction, answers

Most confusion in this category comes from comparing products that do different jobs.

- **Search results.** A query goes in and ranked URLs with snippets come out. The agent then decides what to read. Brave's Web Search, Exa's `/search`, Parallel's Search API, Tavily's Search and Firecrawl's `/search` all do this.
- **Content extraction.** A URL goes in and clean markdown comes out, ready for the model's context. Jina Reader and Firecrawl are built for this. Tavily Extract, Exa's contents options, Parallel Extract and Brave's LLM Context endpoint add it next to search.
- **Synthesized answers.** A question goes in and a cited answer comes out. Tavily's `include_answer`, Exa's `/answer`, Brave's Answers endpoint and Parallel's Responses API return one. Jina and Firecrawl don't.

Answer endpoints are convenient, but they put a second model between your agent and the sources. If your agent already reasons well, search results plus extraction usually give it more control over what it cites. That is the [grounding](/glossary/grounding) pattern [agentic RAG](/guides/concepts/agentic-rag) relies on.

## Own index or someone else's

Whether a vendor crawls the web itself decides freshness, coverage and how exposed it is to upstream changes.

Every figure in that table comes from the vendor. The practical point is that Brave, Exa and Parallel can change ranking on their own schedule, while proxy-style search inherits whatever its upstream engine does.

## Official MCP servers

All six have an official MCP server, so each one can be a tool in Claude Code or any MCP client. The hosted ones install with one command; these lines are copied from each vendor's docs:

Brave's official server, `@brave/brave-search-mcp-server`, runs locally over stdio or HTTP with a `BRAVE_API_KEY` environment variable. Brave doesn't publish a `claude mcp add` line for it, but it does publish a Claude Code skills plugin. The older `@modelcontextprotocol/server-brave-search` package is deprecated, so tutorials that use it are out of date. ## Pick by need

### You want the Tavily experience from someone else

Exa and Parallel are the closest full-stack substitutes: each covers search, content, answers and longer research on its own index. Parallel publishes a migration guide for teams moving from Tavily, Exa and SERP APIs. If you only need a search layer and plan to extract separately, Brave's Web Search is the leaner choice.

### You need page content, not links

Start with [Jina Reader](/guides/advanced/jina-reader-api) for single URLs and PDFs, and move to Firecrawl when you need crawls, sitemaps or volume. If you also need search, Brave's LLM Context and Parallel's Extract return grounding text without a separate scraper.

### You want a free or open-source option

Firecrawl's AGPL-3.0 core and Jina Reader's Apache-2.0 pipeline can both be self-hosted with Docker. Both are extraction pipelines first, and neither gives you an independent search index. For hosted and free, Parallel's Search MCP needs no key, and Tavily and Firecrawl both have no-card free plans.

### You want an independent index

Brave, Exa and Parallel each say they run their own. Brave adds Goggles for custom re-ranking and domain filtering; Exa adds semantic retrieval; Parallel adds objective-based queries.

## The APIs, one at a time

### Tavily: the one-key default, now owned by Nebius

Tavily bundles Search, Extract, Crawl, Map and an asynchronous Research endpoint behind one key and one credit pool. Search returns ranked results with short content chunks. `include_answer` adds an LLM-generated answer and `include_raw_content` adds the cleaned page, so one call can cover all three jobs. Depth runs from `ultra-fast` and `fast` to `basic` (the default) and `advanced`, and Tavily claims 180 ms p50 on search. A keyless mode for Search and Extract, set with the `X-Tavily-Access-Mode: keyless` header, is free and rate-limited.

Nebius announced the acquisition on February 10, 2026 and closed it on February 19, 2026. Tavily says its API, data policies and zero data retention are unchanged, and the product now carries the "Tavily by Nebius" brand. Tavily hasn't said anything about pricing after the deal, or whether it runs its own index.

**Verdict:** still the fastest way to give an agent search plus reading through one integration. Keep the layer swappable while the Nebius roadmap plays out.

### Exa: semantic search on its own index

Exa runs its own curated index and ranks results by meaning rather than keywords. `/search` takes a `type` from `instant` and `fast` through `auto` (the default) to `deep-lite`, `deep` and `deep-reasoning`. Each result can carry full `text`, LLM-picked `highlights` or a `summary`. `outputSchema` returns structured output, and `/answer` returns a cited answer. Around the core sit Websets, Monitors and Exa Agent; Exa retired its older Research API in April 2026 in favor of `deep-reasoning` search. The hosted MCP server exposes `web_search_exa` and `web_fetch_exa` by default and covers casual use without a key. Exa raised a Series C led by a16z in May 2026 and remains independent.

**Verdict:** the pick for research-shaped agents where finding the right sources is the hard part. [Exa vs Tavily](/guides/comparisons/exa-vs-tavily) compares the two in depth.

### Brave Search API: an independent index with LLM Context

Brave sells search over what it describes as its own independent index, the same one behind Brave Search. One Search plan covers Web Search, which returns ranked URLs with up to five extra snippets plus Goggles for custom re-ranking. The same plan covers LLM Context, launched in February 2026, which returns pre-extracted text, table and code chunks sized to a token budget. A separate Answers plan exposes an OpenAI-compatible chat-completions endpoint with citations and streaming. From Brave's quickstart:

There's no official SDK, the MCP server runs locally rather than hosted, and new accounts need a card even for the free monthly credits.

**Verdict:** the best choice when you want independent results and grounding text from one request, and you're comfortable running the MCP server yourself.

### Parallel: objective-based search and deep research

Parallel, from Parallel Web Systems, takes a natural-language `objective` instead of a keyword string and returns ranked URLs with LLM-ready excerpts. Search has four modes, from `turbo` at about 200 ms to `advanced` (the default) at about 3 seconds. Extract turns URLs, including JavaScript-heavy pages and PDFs, into markdown. The asynchronous Task API runs research and enrichment jobs lasting from 10 seconds to two hours, returning citations, reasoning and confidence. OpenAI-compatible Responses and Chat endpoints return cited answers. Search and Extract are generally available on v1, while FindAll, Entity Search and Chat are in beta as of September 2026. Parallel says every query is served from its own index, and its hosted Search MCP is free and anonymous.

**Verdict:** the strongest answer to "Tavily vs Parallel" if you want latency modes and deep research from one vendor. For Search and Extract, build on the v1 endpoints, not the legacy `/v1beta` ones.

### Jina Reader: extraction first, search on top

Jina Reader turns any URL into markdown through a URL prefix, and `s.jina.ai` searches and then reads each top result in full. It's the simplest extractor here, with dozens of headers for selectors, timing, caching and token caps. It relies on third-party engines for web results, has no answer endpoint, and search needs an API key. Elastic completed its acquisition of Jina AI on October 9, 2025, and says the API continues as before. The [Jina Reader API guide](/guides/advanced/jina-reader-api) documents every header.

**Verdict:** the zero-integration extractor. Pair it with a search API that runs its own index.

### Firecrawl: extraction and crawling at scale

Firecrawl's `/search` returns titles, descriptions and URLs, and `scrapeOptions` adds full-page markdown, HTML, links or screenshots for each result. Its real strength is `/scrape`, `/crawl` and `/map`, which turn a page or a whole site into clean markdown. General web search runs on an unnamed upstream provider, alongside Firecrawl's own Research and Developer indexes. Firecrawl now calls `/agent` the successor to `/extract`. The AGPL-3.0 core had about 179,000 GitHub stars as of September 2026, and the hosted MCP server works without a key.

**Verdict:** the extraction workhorse. Its search is a convenient front door to scraping, not an independent index.

## Also on the shortlist

Four more APIs come up in the same evaluations:

- **SerpApi** returns structured results pages from Google, Bing and other engines as JSON, with no index of its own. Google sued SerpApi in December 2025, and SerpApi says its service is unchanged.
- **The Perplexity Sonar API** is being replaced. Perplexity's docs say Sonar Chat Completions is now the Agent API, and Sonar is supported until September 27, 2026. A separate Search API returns raw ranked results from Perplexity's own index.
- **Linkup** returns search results, sourced answers or structured output from its own index plus data partners, and has a hosted MCP server.
- **The You.com API** says its index is operated by You.com, not resold, and offers search, contents, answer and research endpoints with a hosted MCP server.

## What changed in 2025 and 2026

- **October 9, 2025:** Elastic completed its acquisition of Jina AI. It announced Jina On-Prem on July 27, 2026, and has sold it as its own SKU since August 10, 2026.
- **November 2025:** Parallel raised a Series A co-led by Kleiner Perkins and Index Ventures.
- **February 12, 2026:** Brave launched the LLM Context API and reorganized its plans into Search, Answers, Spellcheck and Autocomplete. Exa launched Exa Instant the same month.
- **February 19, 2026:** Nebius closed its acquisition of Tavily, first announced February 10. Tavily keeps its brand.
- **April 29, 2026:** Parallel raised a Series B led by Sequoia Capital.
- **May 2026:** Parallel launched Index by Parallel, which compensates content owners (May 19), and Exa raised a Series C led by a16z (May 20).
- **July and August 2026:** Parallel added Turbo mode (July 13), the Responses API (July 21), free monthly credits (July) and Fast mode (August 21).
- **As of September 2026:** Firecrawl calls `/agent` the successor to `/extract`, and Perplexity supports Sonar until September 27, 2026.

## How to evaluate on your own workload

Each vendor here publishes benchmarks it ran itself, and none of them will match your traffic. A short bake-off will:

1. **Collect 30 to 50 real queries** from your agent's logs, including the hard ones: recent events, niche docs, and product names that collide with common words.
2. **Score each job separately.** For search, check whether a page that answers the query lands in the top five. For extraction, check whether the returned text holds the facts you need without navigation or banners.
3. **Measure the context bill.** Count the tokens each API puts into the prompt per query. Long raw pages can cost more downstream than the API call does.
4. **Track p50 and p95 latency** from the region your agent runs in, and count failures: 429s, empty content and timeouts.
5. **Test the interface you'll ship.** If your agent uses MCP, evaluate the MCP server, because its tool names, defaults and truncation differ from the REST API.
6. **Check data terms.** Several vendors offer zero data retention, some only on enterprise plans, so get it in writing.

## How to choose

- **One integration for everything:** Tavily, or Exa if you'd rather have an independent index.
- **Search quality is the product:** Exa or Parallel. Run both on your own queries.
- **Independent results plus grounding text in one call:** the Brave Search API with LLM Context.
- **Reading known URLs, PDFs or whole sites:** Jina Reader for single pages, Firecrawl for crawls.
