# Claude vs ChatGPT for Writing and Marketing Copy

## The short answer

- **Long-form with a house voice**: Claude. A Project plus a brand-voice skill applies the voice on every draft, on every plan.
- **Twenty headline variants and a hero image**: ChatGPT. Breadth is the product.
- **A finished `.docx` or `.pptx`**: either. Claude's document skills and ChatGPT Work both return real files; Claude's work on Free.
- **A task across a folder of files**: Claude Cowork, on a paid plan. ChatGPT Work is the counterpart, also paid.

## Long-form quality and voice control

Both tools give you a Project: a workspace with uploaded files, custom instructions, and its own memory, so every chat about a product launch starts with the brief and the style guide already loaded. Anthropic's help center lists Claude's Projects on every plan, capped at five on Free (the pricing page files them under Pro and above), and paid plans switch to a retrieval mode when the knowledge base gets large. ChatGPT's Projects keep chats, files, instructions, and project-only memory together and can hold both Chat and Work sessions. Call this a draw.

The difference is what sits above the Project. Claude has skills: a folder with a SKILL.md you upload as a ZIP on any plan, which Claude applies automatically when the task matches, in chat, in Cowork, and in the Microsoft 365 add-ins. ChatGPT has custom GPTs: a packaged assistant with instructions, files, and optional actions that lives inside ChatGPT and needs a paid plan to build. Skills compose, so a voice skill and a format skill can both fire on one draft; a conversation happens inside one GPT. ## Document creation

Claude ships four [document skills](/guides/skills/claude-document-skills) (`docx`, `pptx`, `xlsx`, `pdf`) that build the file through code execution instead of pasting Markdown, and they are on by default whenever code execution is enabled. A landing-page draft becomes a Word file with headings and styles; a campaign plan becomes a deck. On paid plans, Claude for Word, PowerPoint, and Excel are Microsoft AppSource add-ins that work on the open file, and enabled skills apply inside them.

ChatGPT's answer is Work mode: describe the outcome, and ChatGPT plans the task, gathers context, and returns a document, presentation, spreadsheet, or PDF you review in a viewer and download. It accepts `.docx`, `.xlsx`, and `.pptx` inputs or a Google Docs link, and templates pair a reference file with reusable instructions so recurring reports match. OpenAI's help center lists Work as rolling out to paid plans, excluding Free and Go. ChatGPT also has PowerPoint and Excel add-ins. Verdict: a draw on capability; Claude wins on plan availability.

## Research grounding

Both search the web. Claude reaches your own material through MCP connectors (Drive, Notion, Slack, and a custom one on Free) and, in Cowork, through a built-in browser. ChatGPT reaches it through plugins that bundle connectors and skills, plus a built-in browser for research. For sourced answers with citations on every line, [Perplexity](/tools/perplexity) beats both, and a source-grounded notebook like [Gemini Notebook](/tools/notebooklm) is safer for "answer only from these PDFs." Verdict: a draw; add a research tool if citations matter.

## Collaboration

Claude's Team and Enterprise plans share Projects with specific people or the whole organization, with view-only or edit rights, and Artifacts can be published or shared inside the org. ChatGPT's Business and Enterprise workspaces get shared connections and Workspace Agents: governed, schedulable agents the team runs without rewriting the prompt, triggerable from other systems through an API. Verdict: ChatGPT for a team that wants to publish a repeatable process; Claude for a team that shares context and lets each person work.

[Claude Cowork](/tools/claude-cowork) points at a folder on desktop, or runs a cloud session on web and mobile, reads and writes files there, shows each step, asks before anything destructive, runs on a schedule, and loads a marketing plugin with skills and connectors for the role. It needs a paid Claude plan. ChatGPT Work plans a task, pulls context from files, projects, plugins, and the web, and runs in a managed cloud environment on the web or locally in the desktop app, pausing for approval before consequential actions; it also runs scheduled tasks. Verdict: Cowork if the work is a folder of files you own; Work if it is a document that needs to exist by Friday and you are already in ChatGPT.

## Which to choose

Pick Claude when the voice matters more than the variety, when the deliverable is a file, or when a task spans a folder. Pick ChatGPT when you want the most options per prompt, image and voice in the same window, or a workspace agent the whole team runs.
