# Claude for Founders: Which Claude Product for Which Job

> A surface map for founders: when to use claude.ai, Claude Design, Cowork, Claude Code, Claude for Excel, and Claude in Chrome, with a job-to-product table.

One Claude subscription opens six surfaces, and picking the wrong one wastes the afternoon. Use claude.ai for thinking, writing, and research; Claude Design for decks and prototypes; Cowork for files and apps on your desktop; Claude Code for building software and analyzing data; Claude for Excel inside a model; Claude in Chrome for work on a website.

A Claude subscription is no longer one product. It is a chat window, a design tool, a desktop agent, a coding agent, an Excel add-in, and a browser extension, all sharing the same models and the same usage limits. The right one depends on where the work lives: in your head, in a folder, in a spreadsheet, or on a website. This guide is the map, from a developer who uses all six and watches founders open the wrong one.

## claude.ai: thinking, writing, research

The chat window is still where most founder work should start, because most founder work is deciding and explaining rather than producing artifacts. Three features carry the weight.

**Projects** are folders of chats that share an uploaded knowledge base. Anthropic's help center describes the project knowledge area as the place where "anything you upload... will be used across all of your chats within that project," and as the base grows Claude switches to a retrieval mode that keeps it fast. A founder should have one Project per long-running thread: the fundraise (deck, data room index, investor notes), the hiring loop (job descriptions, scorecards), each major customer. The context stops evaporating between chats.

**Web search and research** turn the chat into a sourced research assistant. Ask for a competitor comparison and you get citations you can check rather than confident recollection. Save the good ones into the relevant Project.

What claude.ai is not for: anything that needs to happen *to* your files rather than *about* them. If you find yourself copying output into a spreadsheet, a deck, or a folder, one of the surfaces below would have done that step for you.

## Claude Design: decks and prototypes that look finished

[Claude Design](/tools/claude-design) is the same conversation pointed at visual output. Anthropic's help center describes it as a way to "create designs, interactive prototypes, presentations, and more by having a conversation with Claude," reachable at claude.ai/design or from the desktop sidebar, available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, and still in beta as of September 2026.

Two things make it more than a slide generator. It builds a design system during onboarding from your existing files, so the fourth deck matches the first. And it exports where founders actually need things: PPTX, PDF, standalone HTML, and a handoff to Claude Code when a prototype should become real software. The beta caveats are the ones you would expect: comments occasionally fail to persist, and multi-person editing is unreliable.

Use it for the investor deck, the one-pager, and the clickable prototype you want to put in front of five users before writing code. Use plain claude.ai for the outline.

## Cowork: work across your files and apps

[Claude Cowork](/tools/claude-cowork) is the surface founders have heard of least and would use most. Anthropic describes it as Claude that "works directly in folders and tools you choose," on macOS and Windows (with cloud sessions on web and mobile in beta since July 2026), with connectors into Microsoft 365, Google Drive, and Slack, a built-in browser that can "open sites, fill forms, and finish web tasks," and scheduled runs that happen "daily, weekly, or monthly" while you are not watching.

The mental model is a capable operations hire who works in your actual folders. "Go through every signed contract in this folder and build a renewal-date tracker." "Every Monday, pull last week's support tickets and write me a one-page summary." "Take this folder of receipts and produce an expense sheet." Each of those is a Cowork task, not a Claude Code task, because the output is a document or an updated system rather than software.

## Claude Code: building and data

[Claude Code](/tools/claude-code) is an agent that lives in one project folder, reads and edits the files there, and runs commands. Anthropic's overview describes it as available "in your terminal, IDE, desktop app, and browser." For a founder the test is simple: if the thing you want should exist as software, or as an analysis someone can rerun, this is the surface.

That covers more than it sounds like. A landing page, an MVP, an internal admin tool, a script that reconciles two exports, a chart from a CSV, a data pipeline that runs nightly. The distinguishing feature against Cowork and the app builders is what it leaves behind: ordinary files in an ordinary folder, plus a `CLAUDE.md` briefing and a git history, which is exactly what an engineer needs on day one.

## Claude for Excel and Claude in Chrome: inside the tools you already use

Two surfaces reach into places the others cannot.

[Claude for Excel](/tools/claude-for-excel) is an add-in, generally available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, for Excel on the web, Windows, and Mac. Its docs promise the things a founder actually wants from a model: answers "with cell-level citations," value changes that keep "formula relationships intact," root-causing a `#REF!` error, and building a model from a description. It shares context with Claude for PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook, and it warns you before overwriting data. The docs are equally plain about limits: no macros or VBA, and not for "final client deliverables without human review."

[Claude in Chrome](/tools/claude-for-chrome) is a browser extension that, in Anthropic's words, "allows Claude to read, click, and navigate websites alongside you." It is available on all paid plans and runs inside Cowork and Claude Code as well as a Chrome side panel. The same help article says it "is enhanced with our safety classifiers but is still risky," and the side panel defaults to a mode that reviews each action and pauses for approval on anything sensitive. Good uses: comparing suppliers across ten tabs, filling a government form, working through a portal that has no export button. Keep it away from your bank until you have watched it work.

## Choosing, in practice

Start every task in claude.ai unless the output is a file, a deck, or a system. If it is a deck or prototype, Claude Design. If it is a document or a tracker built from files you already have, Cowork. If it is software or a reproducible analysis, Claude Code. If it is a spreadsheet you are already in, Claude for Excel. If it is a website, Claude in Chrome.

All six draw from one usage pool that resets in five-hour sessions with a weekly cap, so the plan you pay for matters more than which surface you open.
