The Gemini app is Google's general-purpose AI assistant, and the one to pick if your company lives in Gmail, Docs, and Sheets. Deep Research produces editable research plans and cited reports, Gems save reusable instructions and files, and paid Google AI plans put Gemini inside Workspace apps. Not to be confused with Gemini CLI, the developer terminal agent.

Gemini is Google's general-purpose AI assistant: the app at gemini.google.com, the Android and iOS apps, and the Gemini features that appear inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet, and Vids. This page is about that assistant. It is not about [Gemini CLI](/tools/gemini-cli), Google's open-source terminal agent for developers, which shares the models but is a different product.

It is aimed at people who already work in Google's tools. If your company runs on Workspace, Gemini is the assistant that can read the email thread, draft the doc, and build the spreadsheet without you copying anything between windows. For everyone else it competes head-on with [ChatGPT](/tools/chatgpt) and [Claude](/tools/claude) as a research, writing, and image tool.

## Highlights

- **Deep Research** — turns a question into a research plan you can edit before it runs, then browses sources and writes a multi-page, cited report. It can pull from the web, Gmail, Drive, Chat, and uploaded files, and the output can become an Audio Overview.
- **Gems** — saved assistants with detailed instructions and reference files. Start from Google's premade Gems or build your own for a repeatable job such as a brand-voice editor or a weekly-report writer.
- **Canvas** — a working surface next to the chat for drafting and revising documents and turning research into interactive content.
- **Gemini in Workspace apps** — on paid plans, Gemini sits inside Gmail (summarize threads, draft replies), Docs (formatted first drafts), Sheets (build tables and formulas), Slides, Drive, Meet (notes and captions), and Vids.

- **Images, video, and Live** — image generation and editing on the Free plan, video generation on paid plans, and Gemini Live for spoken conversations.

## In a founder or marketer workflow

The pattern that pays off is to keep source material in Drive and let Gemini reach it. A campaign retrospective, for example, starts as a Deep Research request that names the Drive folder and the metric that matters:

Edit the plan, run it, then open the report in Canvas to cut it into the memo you actually need. For the recurring version, save the instructions and the folder as a Gem so next quarter is one prompt.

> Gemini in Workspace only retrieves content your Google Account already has access to, so a Deep Research run over Drive sees exactly what you could open yourself, and nothing a colleague has not shared with you.

## Good to know

The Gemini app runs on the web and in Android and iOS apps. Plans as of September 2026, per gemini.google: Free at $0 with a Google Account (Gemini 3.6 Flash with varying access to 3.1 Pro, plus image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, and Gems), Google AI Plus at $4.99 per month (2x the Free usage limits and Gemini in Gmail, Docs, and Vids), Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month (4x limits, Gemini directly in Google apps, and 5x more Audio Overviews in Gemini Notebook), and Google AI Ultra from $99.99 per month (up to 20x limits, Deep Think, and Gemini Spark in select countries). Google says usage limits are compute-based, so a long chat with heavy features consumes more than a short one.

For businesses, Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and the rest is included in Google Workspace Business Standard and higher rather than bought per user, and company data is not used to train models or serve ads. Availability of individual features still varies by country, language, account type, and age, so check what your Workspace admin has turned on.
