# Ideogram

> An image generator built around reliable text rendering, with prompt tooling, background control, on-brand custom models, an API, and an MCP server.

Ideogram is the image generator designers reach for when the picture has to contain words. Its docs put typography first: Ideogram 4.0 is described around prompt fidelity and crystal-clear type, with background removal and replacement, custom on-brand models trained from your approved assets, task-focused AI apps, and access via app, API, and an MCP server.

Ideogram is the image generator you reach for when the image has to say something. Most models still turn a headline into approximate lettering; Ideogram's documentation puts typography at the center, describing the 4.0 model around "prompt fidelity, crystal-clear type, reliable editing, and production-ready image workflows," and stating plainly that it "excels at integrating text into images for logos, branding, POD, or design layouts."

That focus makes it a different kind of tool for a designer. A generator that renders legible type is useful for the exact deliverables a general model cannot touch: a logo exploration, a packaging comp, a poster with a real headline, an ad variant that has to carry a price and a legal line.

## Highlights

- **Type that survives.** Text rendering is the product, not a side effect, with a dedicated text-and-typography prompting guide for correcting what comes out wrong.
- **Custom models for a brand.** Train an on-brand model from your approved assets so later generations follow your style, art direction, typography, and visual identity, rather than re-describing the look each time.
- **Background control.** Remove a background for a transparent cutout, or replace it with a scene generated from a prompt, which is the step that turns a comp into a usable asset.
- **Magic Prompt and Prompt Builder.** One expands a short idea into a detailed prompt; the other composes a scene element by element, or imports images, for structured and repeatable prompting.
- **AI Apps for the boring jobs.** Task-focused workflows including Background Remover, Object Remover, and Ad Resizer, so routine resizing does not need a full generation cycle.
- **App, API, and MCP.** The app for hands-on work, the API at developer.ideogram.ai for product integration, and an MCP server so an assistant like Claude can use Ideogram inside a wider workflow.

## In a designer's workflow

The pattern that gets the most out of it is to treat Ideogram as a comping tool for text-bearing layouts and then rebuild the winner properly. Generate ten poster directions with the real headline in place, pick one, and set the type yourself in the final file.

```text
A minimal recruitment poster, off-white ground, single column.
Headline exactly: "We are hiring designers"
Subhead exactly: "Remote, Europe, apply by 30 November"
Heavy grotesque type, generous margins, one small abstract mark
in the lower right. No other text anywhere in the image.
```

Two habits matter. Quote the copy exactly and say "no other text anywhere in the image," because stray invented words are the most common failure. And treat the output as a layout proposal, not final artwork: generated type is pixels, so anything that has to be localized, edited, or set at another size gets rebuilt. When the deliverable needs to leave as an editable vector, that job belongs to [Recraft](/tools/recraft); when it needs a photographic mood rather than words, [Midjourney](/tools/midjourney) is the better fit.

> [!WARNING]
> Ideogram says images are public by default unless you choose private generation where it is available. For unreleased campaigns, confirm private generation is active on your plan before the first prompt, not after.

## Good to know

Ideogram is a hosted web product. There is a free tier with limited weekly generation, paid personal plans, and a separate Team plan; the API is billed separately from subscription credits. Priority credits, which generate instantly, come only from paid plans and top-up purchases. Unused subscription credits expire at the end of the billing cycle, while unused top-up credits carry over because they are only consumed after subscription credits run out.

Worth quoting, because it is unusually honest for a vendor: Ideogram's own docs say pricing and credit amounts can change and tell you not to rely on static tables in documentation for purchase decisions. Treat any plan comparison, including this one, as a pointer to the live pricing page.
