# Recraft

> An AI image platform built for designers, with editable vector output, reusable custom styles, mockups, and an API for image and vector generation.

Recraft is the AI image tool aimed at production design rather than concept art: it generates editable vector graphics, not just rasters, turns uploaded reference images into a reusable style without training, and exposes generation, editing, and background removal through an API. Plans run Free, Basic, Pro, and Teams, and commercial rights start at Basic.

Recraft is the AI image tool that behaves most like a design tool. The differentiator is output format: it generates editable vector graphics with usable typography, not only rasters, which is the difference between an asset you can hand to a developer and an asset you have to redraw. Its own framing leans on art direction, describing generations that come out "art-directed, atmospheric, and stylistically alive."

For a working designer that combination matters more than raw fidelity. A generator that produces a beautiful PNG you cannot recolor at 2am is a mood board tool. One that produces a layered SVG in your brand style is part of the pipeline.

## Highlights

- **Vector and SVG output.** Recraft's headline claim is "unmatched vector generation," producing complex editable vector graphics with design-ready typography. Raster-to-vector conversion is unlimited from Basic up.
- **Custom styles with no training step.** Upload reference images and Recraft turns them into a reusable, editable style you can apply to every later generation. On Teams, custom styles are shared across the workspace.
- **A studio, not just a prompt box.** Mockups, an AI photo editor, background removal and replacement, creative upscale, custom color palettes, and an artistic-level control, plus an extract-prompt tool for reverse-engineering a look.
- **External models alongside its own.** Free is restricted to Recraft's models; paid plans open up other image generation and editing models, and Pro adds video generation with full video controls.
- **A real API.** Programmatic image and vector generation, editing, background removal, inpainting, outpainting, batch jobs, and asynchronous processing, with models across the V2, V3, V4, and V4.1 generations. Billed in prepaid API Units that do not expire.
- **Team plumbing.** Shared workspace, shared styles, centralized account management and billing, SSO, and shared top-up credits.

## In a designer's workflow

The workflow Recraft is built for is an icon set, a spot-illustration series, or a set of brand marks that all have to look like siblings. Define the style once, then generate against it.

```text
1. Upload 4-6 reference images that carry the look you want.
2. Save them as a custom style; name it after the brand, not the vibe.
3. Generate the set as vectors, one prompt per subject, same style.
4. Open the SVG, check the type is outlined the way you expect,
   and fix the two that came out wrong instead of re-rolling all ten.
```

That last step is the honest one. Vector output is not a guarantee of clean geometry, and a generated SVG usually needs a pass before it enters a design system. Budget for it. The [Claude Design guide](/guides/design/claude-design-guide) covers the other half of the job, getting those assets into a layout that uses your tokens.

> [!WARNING]
> The Free plan is not a small paid plan. Recraft states that Free images are owned by Recraft, are publicly visible in the community gallery, and are not licensed for commercial use. Anything a client will see needs a paid plan from the first generation, not a later upgrade.

## Good to know

Recraft is a hosted web product with no desktop app. Plans are Free, Basic, Pro, and Teams; annual billing is offered at a discount and monthly credits reset each cycle without rollover. Pricing figures are loaded live on the pricing page and change, so check them there rather than trusting a number in an article.

Two limits are worth planning around. Free caps you to three generations per style per day, a handful of uploads and vectorizations, no parallel generation, and no commercial use. Parallel generation counts rise with the plan, which is the setting that decides whether an icon set takes ten minutes or an hour.

Against the alternatives: [Midjourney](/tools/midjourney) wins on aesthetic defaults and loses on editability, and [Ideogram](/tools/ideogram) is the one to reach for when the image has to contain correct, legible text. See [best AI image generators in 2026](/guides/comparisons/best-ai-image-generators-2026) for the comparison and [best AI tools for designers in 2026](/guides/comparisons/best-ai-tools-for-designers-2026) for where a generator sits in the wider stack.
