ABBYY FineReader PDF applies AI-based OCR to scans and PDFs, with a Windows OCR Editor for checking recognized text against the source image.

ABBYY FineReader PDF uses AI-based OCR to digitize scans and make document text searchable or editable. Recognition produces a text version of pictured characters; checking that text against the source image is a separate review action. ABBYY's product overview describes the OCR capability.

The documented FineReader PDF 16 Windows OCR Editor has Text and Verification views with low-confidence word or character cues. Selecting a word can highlight its region in the source image and display an enlarged comparison. Replacement suggestions and dictionary entries assist the review. ABBYY's recognized-text help documents this surface.

Evaluate source comparison, not just readable output

Our proposed first trial uses a short scan you are authorized to review. Preserve its original image and raw OCR, then inspect a few known character concerns beside their source regions. Keep a correction ledger outside the source so every proposed repair remains traceable. This is an author-designed fidelity workflow, not a recognition benchmark.

In the fictional club flyer, P1's OCR says “Meet at R00m 8. Bring the blue folder.” The readable scan confirms “Room 8.” The intended repair targets Unicode code-point span [8, 12), whose original string is R00m. Page P2 has a torn month name without a clear source reading, so it remains unresolved.

The OCR-review guide shows why that one occurrence should be recorded as a span rather than replaced globally. A better-looking sentence is insufficient evidence for a transcription repair. The proposed characters need to match the particular source region.

Retain the review record

Assign page IDs and preserve the exact text version used for offsets. Record original, replacement, source location, reason, status, and reviewer. If two readings disagree, keep both visible until the reviewer resolves the region. Do not use a nearby document to guess missing letters in this scan.

The OCR Fidelity Reviewer organizes supplied text and readable scans or verified human image notes. It must distinguish direct image inspection from relying on those notes. A valid span check cannot determine whether the proposed replacement is what the image actually says.

Optical character recognition is recognition, while this workflow's acceptance decision concerns faithful transcription. Keep interpretation or modernization separate. Apply accepted repairs to a distinct working copy after the reviewer confirms them, preserving both the source and unresolved regions.

Access and platform scope

As checked on October 7, 2026, FineReader PDF has paid subscriptions and trial access. ABBYY lists Windows and a distinct Mac product. Its pricing page is the reference.

This entry concentrates on the documented Windows OCR Editor; it does not assume those controls exist in the Mac product. For your trial, verify that the actual application gives the comparison surface you need. A useful result is not merely clean text, but accepted source-backed repairs with an unchanged original and a clear list of what could not be read.
