What each one actually is
Clay is a spreadsheet where every column is an enrichment step. You give it a list, add a column, choose a provider or write an instruction, and it fills the column. The pricing shape is the real difference
This is where the comparison usually goes wrong, because both pages advertise a monthly number and the numbers are not measuring the same thing.
Clay has no per-seat charge at all. It runs two meters, actions and credits, and they scale independently, so you can exhaust one while the other sits untouched. As of September 2026 the free tier is $0 with 500 actions a month, 100 credits a month, and a 200-row table cap. The entry paid tier, Launch, is $167 a month billed annually, and Clay's own page decomposes that into $54 of actions and $113 of credits. Growth is $446 a month billed annually, decomposing into $185 and $261, or $495 billed monthly, with a 14-day trial on paid plans. The number that actually matters is the one nobody quotes: the published credit ladder on Launch reaches $1,913 a month as of September 2026. Treat $167 as a floor, not a price.
Apollo prices per user, and here the vendor contradicts itself. The JSON-LD embedded in apollo.io's own pricing page lists Free at $0, Basic at $49, and Professional at $99, with a billing increment of "Monthly". Apollo's own comparison page, dated 13 May 2026, quotes annual rates of Free $0, Basic $49 per user per month, Professional $79 per user per month, and Organization $119 per user per month with a three-seat minimum. Both figures are as of September 2026. The two are reconcilable if $49, $79, and $119 are the annual rates and $99 is Professional billed monthly, but Apollo never says that on either page, and the monthly Basic and Organization rates are not published anywhere we could verify, so we do not print them. Check the tier you are actually being sold before you sign.
Read Apollo's fair-use clause
Apollo advertises unlimited credits on its upper tiers. The contract does not. Its fair-use text caps usage at the lesser of your paid amount divided by $0.025, or one million credits per account per year. As of September 2026 that means a $5,000 annual contract is a 200,000-credit contract, and a smaller contract buys a proportionally smaller ceiling. This is not a hidden fee, it is a published clause, but it changes how you should read the word "unlimited" on the comparison table.
Clay's equivalent trap is structural rather than contractual: two meters means two ways to run out, and the plan you sized on action volume can stall on credits.
What Claude can drive
Both ship a first-party MCP server and both are listed in Anthropic's Connectors Directory as of September 2026, but the setup differs.
Apollo's connector dates from February 2026. The directory lists 13 tools while Apollo's documentation describes more than 50, so ask which number you are being quoted. The endpoint is https://mcp.apollo.io/mcp over OAuth.
