Verdict first: Claude for long-form writing where the voice has to hold, finished documents, and delegated multi-file work in Cowork; ChatGPT for volume and variety in short copy, images in the same chat, and teams already on it. Both have Projects. The real differences are skills vs GPTs, document skills vs Work mode, and brand-voice enforcement.

Key takeaways

  • Both have Projects with files and instructions (Claude's on every plan per the help center; ChatGPT's add project-only memory). Neither is the differentiator.
  • Voice control: Claude skills are portable folders that apply in chat, Cowork, and Office add-ins on any plan; custom GPTs live in ChatGPT and are paid to build.
  • Documents: Claude's document skills produce a real .docx, .pptx, .xlsx, or PDF via code execution; ChatGPT Work returns files on paid plans above Go.
  • Research grounding: both search the web; Claude reaches your files via MCP connectors, ChatGPT via plugins and a browser. Perplexity beats both on citations.
  • Agentic work: Cowork works in a folder you point it at, with permission modes and schedules; ChatGPT Work runs in managed cloud or locally on desktop.
  • Pick Claude when the voice matters more than the variety; pick ChatGPT when the reverse is true. Many teams run both and let the job decide.

Claude for writing where the voice has to hold across many pieces, for finished documents, and for delegated work on a folder of files. ChatGPT for volume and variety in short copy, for an image in the same chat as the headline, and for teams that have already standardized on it. On raw prose quality the two are close enough that the system around the model decides, and that system is what this page compares. Prices live on the Claude and ChatGPT tool pages; nothing here depends on them. For the wider stack, see Claude Code for marketers.

The short answer

  • Long-form with a house voice: Claude. A Project plus a brand-voice skill applies the voice on every draft, on every plan.
  • Twenty headline variants and a hero image: ChatGPT. Breadth is the product.
  • A finished .docx or .pptx: either. Claude's document skills and ChatGPT Work both return real files; Claude's work on Free.
  • A task across a folder of files: Claude Cowork, on a paid plan. ChatGPT Work is the counterpart, also paid.
  • Both: common, and not wasteful if the two jobs above are both yours.

Long-form quality and voice control

Both tools give you a Project: a workspace with uploaded files, custom instructions, and its own memory, so every chat about a product launch starts with the brief and the style guide already loaded. Anthropic's help center lists Claude's Projects on every plan, capped at five on Free (the pricing page files them under Pro and above), and paid plans switch to a retrieval mode when the knowledge base gets large. ChatGPT's Projects keep chats, files, instructions, and project-only memory together and can hold both Chat and Work sessions. Call this a draw.

The difference is what sits above the Project. Claude has skills: a folder with a SKILL.md you upload as a ZIP on any plan, which Claude applies automatically when the task matches, in chat, in Cowork, and in the Microsoft 365 add-ins. ChatGPT has custom GPTs: a packaged assistant with instructions, files, and optional actions that lives inside ChatGPT and needs a paid plan to build. Skills compose, so a voice skill and a format skill can both fire on one draft; a conversation happens inside one GPT. Claude Skills vs custom GPTs goes row by row.

Document creation

Claude ships four document skills (docx, pptx, xlsx, pdf) that build the file through code execution instead of pasting Markdown, and they are on by default whenever code execution is enabled. A landing-page draft becomes a Word file with headings and styles; a campaign plan becomes a deck. On paid plans, Claude for Word, PowerPoint, and Excel are Microsoft AppSource add-ins that work on the open file, and enabled skills apply inside them.

ChatGPT's answer is Work mode: describe the outcome, and ChatGPT plans the task, gathers context, and returns a document, presentation, spreadsheet, or PDF you review in a viewer and download. It accepts .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx inputs or a Google Docs link, and templates pair a reference file with reusable instructions so recurring reports match. OpenAI's help center lists Work as rolling out to paid plans, excluding Free and Go. ChatGPT also has PowerPoint and Excel add-ins. Verdict: a draw on capability; Claude wins on plan availability.

Research grounding

Both search the web. Claude reaches your own material through MCP connectors (Drive, Notion, Slack, and a custom one on Free) and, in Cowork, through a built-in browser. ChatGPT reaches it through plugins that bundle connectors and skills, plus a built-in browser for research. For sourced answers with citations on every line, Perplexity beats both, and a source-grounded notebook like Gemini Notebook is safer for "answer only from these PDFs." Verdict: a draw; add a research tool if citations matter.

Collaboration

Claude's Team and Enterprise plans share Projects with specific people or the whole organization, with view-only or edit rights, and Artifacts can be published or shared inside the org. ChatGPT's Business and Enterprise workspaces get shared connections and Workspace Agents: governed, schedulable agents the team runs without rewriting the prompt, triggerable from other systems through an API. Verdict: ChatGPT for a team that wants to publish a repeatable process; Claude for a team that shares context and lets each person work.

Brand-voice enforcement

This is the row that decides most marketing purchases. On Claude, build a brand-voice profiler skill from your best pieces once, upload it, and every draft in chat, Cowork, and Word inherits the voice; the brand voice entry explains why the skill format holds up where instruction paragraphs drift. On ChatGPT, the equivalent is a GPT with the voice in its instructions plus project instructions, which works well inside ChatGPT and nowhere else. Brand voice with Claude skills is the step-by-step. Verdict: Claude, by portability.

Agentic work: Cowork vs Work

Claude Cowork points at a folder on desktop, or runs a cloud session on web and mobile, reads and writes files there, shows each step, asks before anything destructive, runs on a schedule, and loads a marketing plugin with skills and connectors for the role. It needs a paid Claude plan. ChatGPT Work plans a task, pulls context from files, projects, plugins, and the web, and runs in a managed cloud environment on the web or locally in the desktop app, pausing for approval before consequential actions; it also runs scheduled tasks. Verdict: Cowork if the work is a folder of files you own; Work if it is a document that needs to exist by Friday and you are already in ChatGPT.

Which to choose

Pick Claude when the voice matters more than the variety, when the deliverable is a file, or when a task spans a folder. Pick ChatGPT when you want the most options per prompt, image and voice in the same window, or a workspace agent the whole team runs. The writing tools roundup places both next to Jasper, Copy.ai, Gemini, and Copilot, and which Claude plan for marketers answers the plan question if Claude wins.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude or ChatGPT better for writing marketing copy?
Claude for long-form and anything where a house voice has to hold across many pieces, because skills and Projects give you more voice control on every plan. ChatGPT for short copy at volume, where you want twenty variants and an image in the same chat. On raw prose quality they are close; the difference is the system around the model.
What is the difference between Claude skills and custom GPTs?
A skill is a folder of instructions that loads into whatever Claude session you are already in when the task matches; it works on every Claude plan, in Cowork, and in the Office add-ins, and the same format runs in other tools. A custom GPT is a packaged chatbot you visit inside ChatGPT; creating one needs a paid plan. Skills compose (several active at once); GPTs silo (one per conversation).
Can both produce a finished Word document or slide deck?
Yes. Claude's document skills build real .docx, .pptx, .xlsx, and PDF files through code execution and are on by default when code execution is enabled. ChatGPT Work creates and edits documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, accepts .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx as inputs, and supports templates; OpenAI lists it as rolling out to paid plans, excluding Free and Go.
How do Cowork and ChatGPT Work compare?
Both take a task and return a reviewable result rather than a chat reply. Cowork works in a folder you connect on desktop or in a cloud session on web and mobile, with permission modes, scheduled tasks, and role plugins; it needs a paid Claude plan. ChatGPT Work plans the task, gathers context from files, projects, plugins, and the web, and runs in a managed cloud environment on the web or locally in the desktop app; it is on paid plans above Go.
Should a marketing team pay for both?
Only if two different jobs justify it. A common split is Claude for the long-form and document pipeline and ChatGPT for the ad-copy and image sprint. If you must pick one, pick by the job you do most and check the plan pages for what each tier unlocks.
